Welcome to the Department of Nursing
Introduction
The Pre-service Diploma in Nursing Curriculum was reviewed in 2001 after seven years of implementation. The curriculum, has faced challenges both from Public awareness and demands by new disease patterns and have been greatly influenced by economic, social, educational, political status, health policies as well
as the reforms.
Furthermore, advances in nursing education and practices made it necessary to review the curriculum in
order to keep abreast with the new trends and issues.
The Pre–service Diploma in Nursing Curriculum is an integrated programme and organized in the semester system. The programme lasts for 4 years of 2 semesters each. Upon successful completion, the graduants will be eligible for registration for practice by the Tanzania Nurses and Midwives Council.
The responsibilities of the graduate will be to provide quality Nursing care. This includes promotion of
health, prevention and control of communicable and non -communicable disease; caring for the sick as
well as taking care of the disabled. They will also deal with managerial activities at various levels of health care.
The University Curriculum has been adapted from that of the Ministry of Health (MoH) and will be used as
a guide by Nurse Tutors, Instructors, students and all those involved in training and evaluation of services
This curriculum is made up of 2 parts as follows:
- Part One: The Preamble
- Includes Acknowledgement, Introduction, Vision, Mission Statement, Philosophy, Conceptual Framework, Goal and Program Objectives, Jobs and Tasks, Program Introduction, Admission Criteria, Duration of the Course Teaching Personnel, Teaching Methods and Aids, Assessment Methods, Grading System, Training and Examination Regulation and Total Course Hours.
- Part Two: Courses
- Contains the Course in Level One and Two:
- Level one shows the summary of units, with the corresponding sub units, class, lab, clinical and total hours for each of the courses while.
- Level two contains the course contents for the courses which show the class and
clinical hours with the corresponding objectives contents, teacher/learner strategies, reference/resources and means of evaluation.
NOTE:
Currently the government has developed a new
curriculum for Diploma in Nursing.
Upon recommendation by the government through the Ministry of Health (MoH), UOA will
assimilate and implement the new Nursing Program.
